Kowary used to be a mining and industrial town. A legend tells that in the mid-twelfth century Laurentus Angelus - a master miner discovered deposits of iron ore there. The first document confirming the existence of mines in the area comes from 1355. In 1513 Kowary was granted the town charter by the king Władysław Jagiellończyk. Since then the town developed as an industrial centre and became the largest exporter of iron to Poland. The glory years ended with the outbreak of the Thirty Years War. It is then that the mining industry fell into decline and weaving began to develop gradually. In the seventeenth century Kowary became a centre of The linen canvas production. Late eighteenth and early nineteenth century was difficult for the weavers. They felt exploited by merchants and repeatedly rebelled against that injustice and exploitation. The situation changed only in the second half of the nineteenth century. That was the time when mining began to revive, a carpet factory and a sanatorium was opened as well.

In the days of Hitler row materials were mined here for military purposes. Until the end of 1950s the town was closed, because the Soviets were secretly exploiting the uranium deposits here. In the second half of the twentieth century Kowary were famous mainly for its carpet factory. Currently the attractive location of the town is appreciated by the tourists most.
